Interview: In Earnest Talk About Their Influences and New Singles
By Ashley Gallagher
In Earnest is an alternative band from the United Kingdom. They have mastered the art of combining multiple genres, like folk, rock and pop, seamlessly to create their own sound.
What was the inspiration for Put Me Under?
I do dog-sitting for a living, and on one particular dog sit, I felt incredibly lonely. I've always struggled with my mental health so 'Put Me Under' is a letter to my depression, and also a reminder to myself that I'll never truly be lonely in the company of a dog or two.
Why is the topic of mental health so important to the band?
Mainly because it's such a personal thing that affects us all in some way or another. Especially in times like the past couple of months, it's intensely important to acknowledge mental illness and create awareness around the topic so we can lessen the stigma. By writing songs about mental health we are not just using it as an outlet, but also trying to encourage conversation.
Who has influenced your sound?
We are really inspired by the soundscapes and somber lyrics of Phoebe Bridgers, Noah Gundersen, and Dodie in particular, however, influences fly in from all sorts of genres including folk, rock and metal too.
Why did you choose an alternative style of music to convey your message?
All three of us come from vastly different musical backgrounds - Toby being a folk musician, Tom has played in heavy rock and metal bands, and I am used to being in the realms of the pop/singer-songwriter genres. We all used to be in an Americana/Country band previously, so it's a real mixed bag when you add all that together! Lately, we've tried to push the boundaries of our song-writing - we're drawn to irregular song structures and quirky sounds that lend themselves to an indie and alternative style, although I think each of our songs is slightly different so hopefully, we keep listeners guessing.
What can we expect from In Earnest in the future?
All sorts! Our next single is called 'Come Upstairs' - it's a response to 'Put Me Under' in the fact that it's a song from Tom's perspective and is about how he copes with me and my mental illness. We also have a 6-track EP coming out at the end of the year that includes both singles.
