Music Review: Hot Mulligan's Sound has Evolved on Their New Album, "You'll Be Fine"
By Ashley Gallagher
Our Rating: 4.5/5
Hot Mulligan, a band from Lansing, Michigan, has released another album titled “You’ll Be Fine.” The album was released March 6 via No Sleep Records and is a more concise and straightforward album that exemplifies the band Hot Mulligan wants to be.
“Pilot,” their previous album, was just the beginning for them. It is personal, real and full of emotions, but it felt like Hot Mulligan did not find the right sound they wanted. “You’ll Be Fine” is like that, but it shows how Hot Mulligan has evolved to find their signature sound. Lyrically, it is the same band, but with a more well-rounded sound.
“You’ll Be Fine” has a more diverse sound. There are fun songs, there are sad songs, there are slow songs, but they fit together like pieces to a larger puzzle. The singles “Feal Like Crap,” “BCKYRD” and “*Equip Sunglasses*” were just the beginning. The sound of the album makes the listener long for warmer weather.
“Gree Squirrel in Pretty Bad Shape,” “The Song Formerly Known as Intro” and “Dirty Office Bongos” are songs that have the potential to be interactive live songs. The crowd has the opportunity to scream along with the lyrics and really connect to these. They are full of energy and emotion that could potentially engage the crowd more at Hot Mulligan songs.
It is refreshing to hear a more cohesive sound from them and will make their live shows more exciting to the crowd because they have new songs to sing along to.
Hot Mulligan wanted to make an album to listen to with sunglasses on and they very much succeeded.
