Review: New York Bands Young Culture and Super American Come Together On Powerful New Song, “Why We’re In the Streets”
By Ashley Gallagher
Albany-based band, Young Culture, and Buffalo-based band, Super American, have collaborated on a new, powerful song, “Why We’re in the Streets.”
The pop melody is catchy and you’ll find yourself singing along to the lyrics in no time, but when you stop and actually listen to the meaning of the song, that’s when you really begin to understand the power behind it.
It might be catchy, but it is actually about the protests that are happening around the U.S. The song talks about why the protests are happening. They say that change is among us and we need to be proactive about it, not just on social media, but beyond the screens and in our real life.
The bands sing, “no one on earth deserves to feel any less entitled to the air,” which rings true to everything that is happening in the U.S., and even the world.
The song appears to be mainly about racism, however, both of the bands have been very vocal about how everyone, no matter race, class, sex, etc. should all be equal and accepted as who they are.
This song is a perfect example of how to use a platform for good. The bands are also donating all of the profits to Candles In The S.U.N., which is a nonprofit organization in Buffalo, New York.
